Crochet (pronounced /kroh-shey) is a process of creating fabric from yarn or thread using a crochet hook. The word is derived from the Middle French word croc or crochet, meaning hook.

At one time crochet was considered for the wealthy only. Poor people were expected to stick with knitting basic necessities such as socks and simple clothing and not waste time with crochet. Angry words were published in magazines from the wealthy stating “the lower class should stick to making what was needed rather than fancy items that were not their place to wear or display”. The poor to middle class lashed back as to their rights to use crochet as they pleased. Today's crochet is created by using a variety of yarns to produce a multitude of garments from fashions to home decor. Crochet has been primarily thought of as a woman's craft, but men are starting to catch onto Crocheting for its relaxing qualities and satisfying results.
